Warrington Office Volunteer at Primary School Aspirations Day

19th July 2019

Volunteers from our Warrington office recently attended Aspirations Day at Elm Wood Primary School, Manchester, with over 40 students aged between 6 and 10 attending the event.

The team gave a presentation which included an overview of nmcn and detailed discussion on the different roles and responsibilities of engineers across various disciplines.

The team set up four interactive stands that helped to demonstrate some engineering principles to the students, these activities included:

  • Generating Electricity with Lemons
  • Rocket Propulsion with Balloons
  • Chemical Reactions with Baking Soda & Vinegar
  • Building Structures with Spaghetti & Marshmallows

Paul Foden, contracts engineer commented: “We were extremely happy to be invited to take part in the Aspirations day at Elmwood School. We decided to do something different and interactive on the day as the prospect of keeping 40 energetic young children occupied seemed quite daunting!”

“The team wanted to make a lasting impression on the school and felt the best way was by engagement in experiments to make it a memorable afternoon for them. Our activities were aligned to some of the types of work we carry out and this allowed us to explain the relationship of the tasks to the engineering topic and what an engineer does.”

“We managed to let all the participants complete each of the tasks and each of them were awarded a star medal and certificate for their efforts.”

“The overall experience was a pleasure and seeing the expressions on the children’s faces was priceless”

Staff from Elm Wood Primary school commented “I just wanted to say a huge thank you for your help and for giving up your time to support us on Aspirations Day.

“You and your team had gone to so much effort which made it a fantastic session that was enjoyed by the children and the staff. The feedback from the children has been amazing and they will remember working with you all for a long time. We hope that we will be able to work with you again in the future.”

Paul Foden, Laura Bennett, Mark Gomez, Paul Brophy and Jack Fleetwood volunteered on the day.
