Highways and enabling works for a new £3.2bn polyhalite mine within the North York Moors national park.

nmcn undertook a range of enabling works for the new mine, including:

  • Tree and vegetation clearance, plus major earthworks (497,000m3 cut and fill and 83,000m3 imported fill) to create the site footprint for the mine. We also constructed environmental screening bunds to blend the site in with the surrounding area
  • Construction of car parks, and hard standings for site offices and accommodation, with services connections, drainage and street lighting
  • Delivery of a large-scale two tiered reinforced concrete working platform for mine shaft contractors, as well as reinforced concrete platforms for shaft sinking, tunnels and mine facilities
  • Onsite batching plant construction
  • Extensive surface water drainage works, including a large-scale silt removal facility, swales, culverts, head walls and attenuation ponds
  • Fencing to the site perimeter, including 3m high acoustic fencing
  • Construction of an additional site at Lockwood Beck (location for one of the mine shafts)

Benefits at a Glance

Construction of the main strategic site for a high profile £3.2bn polyphite mine
Key highway and pedestrian improvements in Whitby
Programme and costs reduced through value engineering

Sirius Minerals is a UK based fertilizer development company. Through its North Yorkshire polyhalite project, it will become a world-leading producer of polyhalite, a unique multi-nutrient fertilizer containing potassium, sulphur, magnesium and calcium.

The client required a substantial site constructing to accommodate a new polyphite mine (Woodsmith Mine) and associated infrastructure. The purpose of the mine is to extract potash and transport it to a materials handling facility in Teesside through an underground tunnel. With the site located within the North York Moors national park, there were environmental and logistical constraints associated with the project, which needed careful management. In addition to the Woodsmith Mine works, highway improvements were required in and around Whitby, to discharge planning conditions for the new mine.

Working collaboratively with our client, we value engineered and redesigned the earthworks for drilling pads and site haul roads to replace capping layers with lime modified materials and geogrid layers, which delivered significant cost and programme efficiencies.

Highway works:

We delivered highway works on behalf of Sirius Minerals under a S278 agreement with North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC), dealing with NYCC directly on behalf of our client. We constructed a variety of modifications in and around Whitby, including road widening, formation of junctions for the new mine, installing traffic signals and new pedestrian crossings.

The project was successfully delivered within a challenging twelve month period, enabling the site to be prepared for mobilisation of the mine works contractors. Delivery of the highway improvements enabled Sirius Minerals to fulfil the planning conditions associated with construction of the new mine.
