The scheme at Eaton Socon was to provide the Civil works for Siemens, in order to upgrade and extended an existing National Grid, 400Kv Sub Station.

Works included bulk earth works, transformer bunds, ducting and drawpits as well as other general civils scope.

We delivered a defect free project, to an agreed programme and performed over 25,000 man hours with zero accidents or incidents.

Throughout our construction works the 400kv National Grid Sub Station remained fully operational and no service was restricted or interrupted because of our works.

Challenge

The works at Eaton Socon were to extend and upgrade the existing 400KV National Grid substation.

Operating in a live 400KV National Grid Substation and needed to maintain full access to the existing sub station in case of system emergencies. The required programme meant that we needed to mobilise to site and commence construction whilst the design was still evolving and maturing.

Solution:

We provided 12,000m³ of bulk earth works in order to enable the construction area. We installed a large temporary works screen to enable the extension of the steel frame building whilst maintaining operational status of the building and equipment inside.

We constructed a large super grid transformer bund amongst the circa 1000m³ concrete placed and installed 900m of ducting network including 12 FRC drawpits. We also installed over 500m of drainage including 23 catchpit manholes.

We used collaborative planning and Siemens document control system to manage the design developments during the construction phase and managed site including 80 inductions.

 

Results:

We delivered a defect free project, to an agreed programme and performed over 25,000 man hours with zero accidents or incidents.
