Strategic highway improvements to optimise traffic flow
Successful management of complex public interface

Customer:

Bristol City Council, the local authority of Bristol.

Challenge:

To complete the city centre section of the new MetroBus route, the client required a key part of the city to be remodelled and upgraded. This included upgrading and remodelling public transport infrastructure, creating pedestrian routes and constructing an attractive urban realm area surrounding the Cenotaph.

Solution:

To meet the client brief, we:

  • Constructed a new link road between Baldwin Street and St Augustine’s Parade
  • Undertook concrete piling and created a bridge deck under the road’s surface to protect the culvert that houses the River Frome
  • Widened existing highways to create bus lanes and installed bus stop and bus shelter infrastructure
  • Reconstructed pedestrian areas, including high-specification repaving to the public square around the Cenotaph, and installed new street furniture, bespoke lighting and soft landscaping
  • Created segregated cycle paths for cyclists

Results:

The scheme has brought about positive change for all users of the city centre – car and taxi drivers, bus users, pedestrians and cyclists alike, by providing priority for public transport, reducing congestion and creating new public spaces and routes. It has transformed the area surrounding Bristol Cenotaph, where thousands gather every year for the Remembrance Sunday service and parade.
