EDF Energy Renewables won a contract from National Grid to provide 49 MW of battery storage at its West Burton Combined Cycle Gas power station (WBB CCGT) in Nottinghamshire (the Existing Facility). It shall form part of a new [200 MW] enhanced frequency response system which will be deployed across the UK to balance the UK grid.
nmcn successfully tendered to supply the full scope of works for Lot 2 – BOP Civils and Cabling Works. Included in the nmcn package was all civils works associated with the battery supply system, namely foundations, battery bases, drainage and walkways. The supply and installation of the 6.6KV interconnecting cables and associated containment works.
Owing to the live power station environment there are very high standards in relation to health and safety and these were understandably not relaxed in any way to allow for the construction works to take place. NMC embraced these standards and adopted them as part of their ways of working.
The project itself was split into two lots by EDF. The first lot was awarded to German contractor NIDEC for the supply and installation of the battery storage units themselves. The second lot which was successfully secured by nmcn was awarded in Q1 of 2017 before works started on site in the April.
nmcn worked collaboratively with EDF Energy & Renewables as well as NIDEC to ensure the project was delivered on time, to budget and to the required quality standards. In fact following a collaborative value engineering phase following tender award nmcn were able to deliver the Lot 2 works 10% more effectively than the tendered sum.
nmcn delivered a quality, on time, on budget project with zero health and safety incidents. The success of the project is being used to influence future designs and efficiencies.
