nmcn secures flagship Southside Public Realm scheme

18th March 2021

nmcn, a construction and infrastructure specialist, has been appointed by Birmingham City Council to deliver the civil engineering works as part of the estimated £9.5 million Southside Public Realm transformation project in Birmingham’s City Centre.

The project, which is due to commence in April 2021 for 12 months, will see large-scale redevelopment of the Southside District in the city centre, with work including:

  • High quality paving between Hill Street, Hurst Street and Ladywell Walk
  • The creation of a new pedestrianised square on Hurst Street to be used for event space
  • Enhancements of street furniture, upgrading lighting and the provision of new trees
  • Improvement of the pedestrian crossing facility at the Smallbrook Queensway Junction
  • Improved segregation of the existing contraflow cycleway on Hill Street.

Vip Gandhi, Managing Director of nmcn’s Infrastructure team said: “This project will transform the Southside area of the city centre and will make a real difference in attracting new visitors and tourists.

“Our company’s aim is to ‘have a positive impact on everything we touch’ and we look forward to working with Birmingham City Council to realise this commitment.”

Phil Edwards, Assistant Director Transport & Connectivity at Birmingham City Council commented: “We were impressed with nmcn’s commitments towards social value initiatives and we look forward to working closely with them across the duration of the Southside Public Realm project.”

Throughout the delivery of the works, nmcn will be committed to providing social value benefits and providing legacy within the local community, to improve the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of the area.

nmcn’s appointment to the Southside scheme follows the company’s success in other similar public realm projects – notably the award-winning Grey to Green regeneration project in Sheffield City Centre.
