Michaela Skodova: Making a difference to charities of all sizes

4th June 2019

At nmcn we have a long and established history of supporting charities. Our business was founded on principles of caring for people and a responsibility to others, and those values still hold true today.

We recognise the important of ‘giving back’ to communities directly as a business, and by supporting our people in their own charity work. It has a significant impact on our communities, both locally and further afield, and something we feel reflects our values as a business and as individuals.

We’ve donated significant sums to the charitable endeavours of colleagues across the business over the years. In 2018, our charity committee, made up of representatives across all our business units led by pre-construction manager Dave Blount, coordinated £32,000 in donations as part of our colleague led ‘Giving Back’ scheme.

The scheme, which has been running for more than 10 years, enables anyone from across the business to apply for grants and donations towards charitable ventures including:

  • Working with Portland College, which specialises in working with disabled people to develop their employability, independence and communications skills. We’ve supported their awards scheme for the last three years
  • Supporting Kids Cancer Charity since 2007
  • Helping local schools and sports clubs by providing kits and equipment

This is something we’re looking to build on with the Positive Impact Plan 2025 which we launched this year. We continue to build on our commitment for a ‘positive impact’ by selecting our own charity partner to support alongside our existing commitments.

We have approached several charities as we look for key partners for the next three years to enable us to contribute to support the community and some challenging issues around us.

After successful charity partners are shortlisted, we will then ask colleagues from across the business to vote for the partner of their choice, they feel would benefit from our support through fundraising by our people and volunteering support through our employee volunteering policy.

We’re looking forward to announcing our partner in the coming months and building on the momentum of the charity work we’ve done with our people to date.
