‘Design your own school’ competition – winners announced!

17th July 2020

As part of our Positive Impact Plan and our commitment to support our communities, we launched a ‘design your own school’ competition. We thought this would be a great way to keep children busy, whilst putting their creative brains to work!

We launched the competition to coincide with ‘Children’s Art Week’, a growing campaign run by Engage, the National Association for Gallery Education.

We encouraged children to use materials such as paper, card and felt alongside recyclable materials to build a school, and send in snaps of their creation to be in with a chance to win a £50 Waterstones Voucher.

Following the 10 July deadline, we began sorting through your imaginative submissions. Thank you to each and every entrant – it has been a tough competition for our judges, and we have enjoyed seeing what you have come up with!

Thank you also to the families that have got involved in this competition. Over the past months, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how essential creativity and the arts are for learning, connecting and wellbeing. While venues, cultural organisations and some school buildings have been closed, engaging in the visual arts has been more important than ever.

We are pleased to announce that the winners of the nmcn Children’s Art Week Design a School Competition are:

First Prize  – Most creative – Josh & Neve!

Josh and Neve’s dream school included a playground with a slide, monkey bars and a climbing frame. Josh and Neve used recycled materials including a shoe box and leftover BBQ skewers!

Second Prize – Best use of recycled materials  – James!

James’s Roblox theme school included an ‘Obby’, which was an obstacle course constructed out of milk carton tops, yoghurt pots and cereal boxes. His school included a bell and a functioning whiteboard with a classroom full of his favourite Roblox characters.

Third Prize  – Drawn at random from all entries – Grace!

Grace’s school design featured a multi coloured slide, playtime corner and a classroom setup made from cardboard. Her design also included a lunch area, height chart and lego characters.

Our three winners will each receive a £50 Waterstones voucher.  A huge well done and thank you for sharing your designs with us!

Thanks to everyone who entered and helped spread some positivity during these difficult times! Keep an eye out across our social media channels for future competitions.
