Design Team Lead
"The way we work allows for flexibility, the only barriers around your role are the ones you set up yourself"
What is your role?
Design Team Lead. This means I develop and support others to enable them to deliver our schemes.
How long have you been working with nmcn?
Six years, since July 2012.
Have you had the opportunity to experience other roles within the company?
The way we work allows for flexibility, the only barriers around your role are the ones you set up yourself. I often get involved in non-design tasks such as tendering, estimating, strategic initiatives, project planning an software development. If you have an interest or skill in something we can give you the opportunity to experience it or use.
What is your career highlight so far?
Delivering a first of its kind new water treatment works at Mayflower WTW in Plymouth. We worked on the project from conceptual design through to commissioning. It was probably the toughest time in my life as I took on a lot of responsibility above my existing role. But I grew tremendously from the experience and have a lot of pride in the project when I say “we built that”.
What tips would you give to people looking to apply for jobs at nmcn?
If you’re passionate and care about doing a great job, whatever it takes.
If you can see beyond the typical contractor mindset, and really understand why our customers choose us.
If you want to work and grow at a company that is evolving the industries they work in.
If you can keep your energy and drive regardless of the challenges, to push through and succeed.
Then rest assured you’ll be welcomed with open arms and be a key part of us.
How would you describe the working environment at nmcn?
We have a friendly and supportive collection of people at nmcn who mostly want to see others grow and succeed.
We’re trusted to do the work we’re asked to do and solve our own problems. We’re also trusted to ask for help and support when we need it.
How did you get to your current role? How did you get to where you are today?
I used to be a Design Engineer/Coordinator, with a growing business and team my role evolved into a more managerial one. The company provided me with external training in leadership and management which has made it much easier for me and much more effective for my team.
I completed a MEng in Mechanical Engineering at Sussex University before joining a Power Plant Manufacturer. There I worked in various roles from engineering to business strategy before relocating to Cornwall and joining nmcn. Hard work, customer satisfaction and a dedication to development have led me to my current role. I see with continued enthusiasm and the never-ending increase in opportunities that my career options are limitless.
Would you recommend a career with nmcn?
If you want an easy ride, no challenges and just want to meander through your career then no. If you need and feed off challenges and want to change the world one project at a time then yes.
